Compacted soil and thinning grass don’t stand a chance against this duo. Aeration creates space for air, water, and nutrients, while seeding introduces fresh grass varieties for a thicker, healthier lawn.

Aeration

For a lawn that thrives, regular aeration is a must. In New England, it addresses soil compaction and promotes better water, oxygen, and nutrient uptake. Our core aeration removes 2-4 inch plugs, ideal for fall revitalization.

This Saturday morning Matt C. came out to aerator my lawn and over seed. Which I was happy, but also surprised to see him on the weekend. I've had the pleasure of having Matt do my service before, where he was very accommodating and respectful then too. I asked him if he could give me a few minutes to clean up the dog poop in the yard before he started and he said absolutely. When he was finishing with his work, he explained what to do to care for my lawn and thanked me. Then loaded up the machine and headed out. I was very impressed with Matt's quality of work and especially his work ethic. It is a rare thing to see nowadays and I hope the company rewards their employees like Matt who do a great job representing Mainly Grass so well. Thank you Matt C. for doing a great job!

Aeration & Overseeding Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does aeration and overseeding actually do for my lawn?

Aeration relieves soil compaction by pulling small plugs from the ground, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots more easily. Overseeding spreads new grass seed across your lawn to fill in thin or bare areas. Together, they help create thicker, healthier turf that’s more resilient to heat, drought, and heavy use.

When is the best time to aerate and overseed a lawn?

In New England, late summer through early fall is the ideal time. Warm soil temperatures help seeds germinate quickly, while cooler air temperatures reduce stress on new grass. This timing also gives seedlings several weeks to establish strong roots before winter arrives.

How long does it take for new grass to grow after overseeding?

Most grass seed begins to germinate within 10–14 days, depending on weather and watering. You’ll notice new sprouts fairly quickly, but it takes time for the grass to fully mature. By the following spring, you’ll see the biggest difference as the lawn fills in and thickens.

What should my lawn look like after aeration and overseeding?

It’s normal to see small soil plugs scattered across the lawn after aeration. These break down naturally within a week or two and return nutrients to the soil. You may also notice seed on the surface. While it can look a little messy at first, it’s all part of the process that leads to thicker grass.

How should I water my lawn after aeration and overseeding?

Watering is one of the most important steps for success. We recommend light, frequent watering for the first couple of weeks to keep the seed consistently moist. Once the new grass begins to establish, you can gradually transition back to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage strong root growth.
