Fall is a critical season for lawn care. It's your best chance to prepare your lawn for winter and set it up for a healthy, vibrant spring. At Mainely Grass, we know the right steps now make all the difference. Here are a few fall lawn care tips to keep your lawn in great shape.
Mowing: Adjust Your Height
New England lawns are made up of cool-season grasses that thrive in temperatures between 60-75 degrees, which makes fall a great growing period. Keep mowing as long as your grass is actively growing, usually until daytime temperatures consistently drop below 50 degrees, around November. As growth slows, gradually lower your mower height by about half an inch for the final few cuts, aiming for 2 to 2.5 inches. This height helps prevent snow mold and lets leaves blow across the lawn instead of getting caught in the grass.
Watering: Keep Watering
Your lawn still needs consistent moisture in the fall. Natural rainfall may be enough, but keep an eye on your lawn and add supplemental watering if rainfall is scarce. Water deeply but less often. This helps the soil absorb moisture and encourages deeper root growth. Early morning is the best time to water. It cuts down on evaporation and lowers the risk of fungal disease.
Raking Leaves: Keep Your Lawn Clear
Fallen leaves can smother your lawn. They block sunlight and trap moisture, which can lead to fungal disease and other problems. Rake or mulch your leaves regularly to keep your lawn clear. If you mulch, use a mulching mower to shred the leaves into small pieces. They'll decompose and add nutrients back into the soil. Just don't let a thick layer build up, since that can suffocate the grass underneath.
Mowing, watering, and leaf management all work together. Follow these steps and your lawn will stay healthy, vibrant, and ready for whatever winter brings.
